While we are still reading the summary and rewatching the sessions of the Berlin Climate and Security Conference, negotiations at COP 27 are running at full speed. Loss and damage payments are finally – and rightly – on the agenda, but countries can already invest in reducing the damage caused by climate change while promoting peace and stability. The key is to gain a granular understanding of how climate change threatens human security in fragile contexts, and integrate this across policies and programming.

The Climate for Peace Initiative, which will be the subject of our side-event at COP 27 on 17 November, seeks to ensure climate security is a local and national priority. Looking to support these efforts, the Climate, Peace and Security Assessment on Mali provides a ground-breaking level of detail into a country long seen as a hotspot for compound climate change and conflict risks.
