Climate Change and Energy in the State of the Union

President Obama devoted a considerable amount of time during his State of the Union speech to climate change and energy (a full transcript of his comments is below).

In the twitter-sphere during the speech, much was made of his reference to an “Energy Security Trust” and his mention of the “non-partisan coalition of CEOs and retired generals and admirals” who have supported the idea. But there was some head-scratching as to what coalition the President was referring to.

The coalition is the Energy Security Leadership Council, a project of Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE). In its 2013 “A National Strategy for Energy Security: Harnessing American Resources and Innovation” report, SAFE’s Energy Security Leadership Council called for an “Energy Security Trust Fund,” which it seems the President has endorsed.

Complete transcript of the President’s comments on climate change and energy, taken from ABC News:

"After years of talking about it, we are finally poised to control our own energy future. We produce more oil at home than we have in 15 years. We have doubled the distance our cars will go on a gallon of gas, and the amount of renewable energy we generate from sources like wind and solar – with tens of thousands of good, American jobs to show for it. We produce more natural gas than ever before – and nearly everyone’s energy bill is lower because of it. And over the last four years, our emissions of the dangerous carbon pollution that threatens our planet have actually fallen."
