UNDP Policy Brief: Climate security nexus and prevention of violent extremism

The policy brief examines:

  • The root causes of violent extremism and how they intersect with climate vulnerability
  • Climate change as a risk-multiplier in conflict-affected and fragile contexts
  • Climate security as a strategic consideration for violent extremist groups
  • Integrating climate change considerations into efforts to prevent violent extremism
  • Climate action as part of an integrated approach to increase the opportunity cost of recruitment
  • The different roles and needs of women and youth
  • Strengthening regional approaches and strategies to address climate security and prevention of violent extremism (PVE)

The policy brief draws on recent country level examples, preliminary insights from UNDP’s work streams on climate security and PVE, as well as an online experts’ consultation held on 2 June 2020. It identifies the need for policy and programming to be informed by cross-cutting climate-related security risks and stresses the importance of further research and examination of good practices to address such risks.
