Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the perspective of fragile states

For example, Haiti, Solomon Islands, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Timor Leste and even Comoros are seriously affected by climate change, and require support from the international community.

"The g7+ is a group of 20 countries affected by conflict and fragility. We also put a lot of emphasis on climate security because most of our members are not only land-locked, but some of our member states are also geographically surrounded by ocean and coastal areas. Therefore, we also put emphasis on implementing the SDGs or the Agenda 2030 in terms of managing our water resources and all the things that are affecting the livelihoods of our people in those countries.

Countries like Haiti, Solomon Islands, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Timor Leste or even Comoros. Those are five or six countries of our member states that are also affected by the rising of the ocean in the future. For example, if the Security Council comes up with any resolution [on climate], we will definitely support it in New York.

The more you talk about development, you also have to realize that those countries are left behind and marginalized and they run the risk of being eliminated if we don’t tackle it now for the next 15 years.

Under the tag of climate security, peace and development, everything is interlinked. Development has to be holistic. We are not only talking about development in post-conflict situations from our perspective but we are also talking about countries that are geographically affected by physical pressures, for example, of the small island states. We need to support them. We support the small island states, landlocked countries and those countries that are in specific needs for the implementation of the Agenda 2030. We need to support them."
